Participants will need their own copy of Beneath the Surface of Words: What English Spelling Reveals & Why It Matters by Sue Scibetta Hegland which is available to purchase online or at your local bookstore.

Beneath the Surface of Words is essential reading for any teacher building their own understanding of English orthography (which includes phonology, etymology, and morphology). Hegland's writing style makes concepts easy to understand and she easily demystifies English spelling. This series will provide a space for educators looking to explore this text to create deeper understanding of why we spell words the way that we do and how we can create a space for curiosity around spelling in our classrooms.
